A prayer rug is not mandatory for Muslims, of course. However, using this item gives a sense of calm while performing the five daily Muslim prayers. Prayer rugs come in a variety of designs depending on location and time. We are going to review the essentials of Islamic prayer rugs and their benefits.

The history of the prayer rug

Muslims practice their worship without the need for a prayer mat. This late practice dates back to the 10th or 11th century. Although Muslims can pray on the floor, bed or carpet, they are not required to have one.

The prayer rug is generally used to mark off the prayer area, although some Muslims do not use it. However, this does not mean that the carpet has no importance in Muslim culture. This accessory brings both comfort and usefulness when performing prayers. Both for adults and children.

Carpets were originally made in many royal courts. This is notably the case of the Ottoman (1281-1924), Sephardic (1501-1732) and Mughal (1526-1858) empires. The Ottoman Empire is particularly known for its carpets, which are among the finest examples of carpets produced by kings. So prayer rugs have been used for centuries.

The design of the prayer rug varies . It often depicts the mihrab, a niche in the Qibla wall that indicates the direction of Mecca that Muslims should face to pray. Borders are generally defined using plant motifs.

The prayer rug is not mandatory, but some Muslims choose to use one because it allows them to disconnect from the outside world and better focus on their prayers. This is particularly the case in Sufism.

So why do we use a prayer rug?

The Muslim prayer rug has been designed with the aim of providing exceptional comfort. It also allows you to initiate your children in the correct way of performing the prayers. Giving a prayer rug to a young child promotes the transmission of important Islamic traditions.

Not only does the prayer rug help keep believers clean, it also helps prevent knee and back pain. The mat allows for longer prayers by promoting a comfortable seated position.

Pain prevention

The prayer rug protects the knees from any muscular discomfort in addition to providing optimal prayer conditions for Muslims. The thick prayer mat prevents knee contact with the ground, which is beneficial for knees and joints. With a mat, Muslim worshipers don't have to worry about the length of their prayers. As the kneeling person is well cushioned and protected by the mat, they cannot suffer from any pain or discomfort in the knees.

Cleanliness assured

Most Muslims wear white clothes to pray, as you probably know. They should pray on a quality prayer rug to keep their prayer clothes in good condition and clean. The latter is intended to ensure that the prayer garments remain in good condition. The prayer rug is important for any genuine connection with God, whether Catholic, Protestant or otherwise.

The importance of model choice

At first glance, prayer rugs look like Oriental or even Persian rugs. They are often made of cotton/silk and feature Islamic inscriptions, geometric, floral, arabesque or flowing designs. Wool is another material that can be found in prayer rugs.

Many Muslims use individually sized rugs, called Islamic prayer rugs or simply "prayer rugs", during daily prayers. Varieties and colors can vary widely, from simple, monochromatic versions produced by factories to more intricate woven artworks found in all Muslim countries.

Prayer rugs suitable for children will allow them to be more comfortable during prolonged prayers.

On the aesthetic level, the carpet can be of several colors and patterns. Choose the model that suits you best.

Although Muslims do not traditionally use prayer rugs, those who do reap many benefits.

How to stand on a prayer rug?

The person praying places their feet at the bottom of the mat, their head at the top of the mat, and their hands on either side of the niche, the mihrab. Although some rugs have this Mihrab at both ends, it is usually placed on the front part of the rug to indicate which direction Mecca is. Another feature that indicates a prayer rug intended for Muslims is the presence of a lamp that represents Allah.

By having designs and symbols representing holy places, it helps Muslims to position themselves correctly during prayer.

Is it necessary to use a mat?

Muslims must pray to God (Allah) five times a day. They can pray wherever they want, but good practice advises them to do so in a clean environment. Therefore, if Muslims do not pray in the mosque, they use a prayer mat. This turns the place where they lay the carpet into a temporary mosque. We therefore use a prayer rug according to our personal choices.

The prayer rug is used to create a clean surface for praying. In Islam, cleanliness is required for all prayers, which are called “salat”. Muslims pray five times a day, and before each session they must perform ablutions; clean hands, feet and face.

It is not necessary to perform the prayer on a mat. No one is forcing you to pray on a prayer rug or mat. You can pray without using a prayer rug as long as the area is clean and free of pollutants. The floor of the Prophet's Mosque (peace be upon him) was made of sand and dust.
